QUEER PRESS GRANT
The 2008 Queer Press Grant has just been announced, and I'm a winner! I'll be sharing the award with Tommy Roddy (Pride High), which I'm thrilled with. Tommy and I have been working together on panels and events for the upcoming Wonder Con, and he's a true gentleman, as well as being incredibly productive and talented.
The Grant is sponsored by Prism Comics, a non-profit supporting LGBT comics, cartoonists, and fans, and I'll use it to produce a 64-page trade paperback of my Glamazonia the Uncanny Super Tranny material. The book will collect all the work from the recently-published mini-comic, plus a new, over-arcing story, along with tons of new art and pin-ups by me and all my cartoonist friends whom I can sucker into doing the work. In this format (with a spine and an ISBN number), I'll finally be able to distribute my Glamazonia material to the gay bookstores, where I imagine it'll find an easier market than in the comic book stores and conventions.
It'll be awhile before I can get this project on the shelves, unfortunately. The Grant took a long time to be decided upon, and since I couldn't wait I've moved onto other projects that I need to focus on now, like my graphic novel The Liar and an upcoming collection of my True Travel Tales, as well as the next Hard To Swallow. I'm hoping to start serious work on Glamazonia towards the end of this year.
My heartfelt thanks goes out to Prism, and also Paige Braddock and Roger Jeres for providing the funds for the Grant. They're really inspiring for trying to make the comics world a better place for LGBT comics and indy cartoonists. You can check out more about all this in the Newsarama article about the Grant here.
